Dynamics of contact line of a droplet on a hydro gel substrate

We studied the dynamics of the wetting and diffusing processes of a water droplet on a hydrogel
(Poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propane-sulfonic acid -co- acrylamide)(PAAM-PAMPS)) substrate.
The profiles of the droplet and substrate were measured simultaneously using a grid projection
method. We observed that during the diffusion process of a water droplet, the contact line takes 2 different
motions : pinned and recede, and the transition of these 2 motions are closely related to the local
deformation of the gel substrate in the vicinity of the contact line.
In this seminar, I’ll talk about the details of our experiment and propose possible mechanism of the present phenomenon.
