Shaping Polymer Networks through Process Engineering

The mechanical performance of elastomers and hydrogels is inherently linked to their structural organization across multiple length scales. Beyond molecular-level interactions, our research highlights processing as a powerful tool to induce specific architectures. By leveraging physical forces—such as shear, elongation, or controlled evaporation—we direct the assembly of polymer networks and particles to create high-performance materials with morphologies that are out of reach through conventional synthesis.

Key research areas:
– Emulsion-templated double network elastomers and solid foams (Xiaoqing Wang, Wei Wang, A.Kovalenko, A.Salonen)
– Alignment of collagen fibers by extrusion (Mélina Motard, A.Marcellan, N.Pantoustier)
– 3D printing of hydrogels (T.Narita)
